Alberta Photography | Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise & Drumheller and More
Alberta is home to some of Canada’s most spectacular landscapes. From the turquoise waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake to the rugged peaks of Banff and Jasper National Parks, every turn offers a new photographic opportunity. During a week-long road trip through Alberta in August 2025, I explored mountain valleys, glaciers, wildlife habitats, badlands and historic sites, documenting the incredible diversity that makes Alberta one of the most photogenic provinces in Canada.
This gallery features photographs captured throughout the journey, including Drumheller, Dorothy, Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway, Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park and even a stop at the Golden Skybridge in neighbouring British Columbia. Whether you’re planning your own trip or simply looking to experience the beauty of Western Canada, these images showcase some of the most memorable destinations in the Canadian Rockies and beyond.
Drumheller and the Alberta Badlands
The journey began in the Alberta Badlands, where dramatic landscapes carved by millions of years of erosion create one of Canada’s most unique environments. Deep coulees, colourful rock formations and vast open skies make Drumheller a dream destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.
The Hoodoos of Drumheller
Among the region’s most iconic landmarks are the Hoodoos, towering sandstone pillars that have become synonymous with the Alberta Badlands. These natural formations provide a fascinating glimpse into the geological forces that shaped the region and remain one of Alberta’s most photographed attractions.
Dorothy, Alberta
Located east of Drumheller, Dorothy is one of Alberta’s best-known ghost towns. Once a thriving prairie community, the settlement has largely disappeared, leaving behind a collection of historic buildings that stand as reminders of life on the Canadian Prairies during the early twentieth century.
Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary
Situated in the foothills west of Calgary, the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary provides a unique opportunity to learn about and photograph wolfdogs in a safe and educational setting. The sanctuary plays an important role in conservation and public awareness while offering visitors a chance to observe these remarkable animals up close.
Exploring Canmore, Alberta
Nestled along the eastern edge of the Canadian Rockies, Canmore combines stunning mountain scenery with a vibrant outdoor culture. Surrounded by towering peaks and endless hiking opportunities, it serves as an ideal gateway to the landscapes that define Alberta’s mountain parks.
Exploring the Town of Banff
The town of Banff is one of Canada’s most famous mountain destinations. Surrounded by rugged peaks and dense forests, Banff offers visitors a unique combination of natural beauty, history, shopping, dining and outdoor adventure, all within the heart of Banff National Park.
Wildlife Along the Bow Valley Parkway
The Bow Valley Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in the Canadian Rockies and one of the best places to encounter wildlife. The route winds through forests and mountain valleys where visitors frequently spot bears, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and a variety of bird species.
Bankhead, Alberta’s Forgotten Coal Mining Town
Hidden within Banff National Park, Bankhead was once a bustling coal mining community that supplied fuel to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, interpretive trails and remaining foundations offer visitors a fascinating look at one of Alberta’s most significant industrial heritage sites.
Lake Louise and the Victoria Glacier
Lake Louise is among the most recognizable destinations in Canada. Known for its turquoise glacial waters and spectacular mountain setting, the lake sits beneath the imposing Victoria Glacier and continues to attract photographers from around the world.
Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks
Few places are as visually stunning as Moraine Lake. Surrounded by the towering Valley of the Ten Peaks, its brilliant blue waters and dramatic mountain backdrop have made it one of the most photographed locations in the Canadian Rockies.
Driving the Icefields Parkway
Often considered one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway connects Lake Louise and Jasper through a landscape of glaciers, waterfalls, mountain peaks and pristine wilderness. Every kilometre reveals another breathtaking viewpoint.
The Columbia Icefield Adventure
The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle. Visitors can experience this incredible natural wonder through guided glacier tours and scenic viewpoints that showcase the immense scale of the surrounding icefields.
Athabasca Glacier
As one of the most accessible glaciers in North America, Athabasca Glacier provides a rare opportunity to witness the power and beauty of a living glacier. Its immense size and striking blue ice make it a highlight of any journey through the Canadian Rockies.
Jasper National Park
Jasper National Park offers some of the most dramatic wilderness landscapes in Canada. Vast mountain ranges, pristine lakes, abundant wildlife and dark night skies make the park a favourite destination for photographers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
