About Johnson Cemetery in Brantford, Ontario
I had spotted this old cemetery years ago and always wanted to stop and see it.
Â
Just a few weeks ago, fellow Ontario explorer and adventure seeker Adam Shoalts sent me a message that he had spotted, what looked like an abandoned cemetery, off the highway 403 in Brantford.
Â
I quickly looked on Google Maps and it was that same cemetery.
Â
So, with thanks to Adam for the nudge, I headed to the cemetery yesterday to finally go and see it!
Â
If you are travelling eastbound down Highway 403 from Brantford Ontario, just after you pass the Johnson Road overpass, if you look to the right at just the right time – you’ll notice a very old hidden cemetery in an overgrown field.
Â
Located to the east off Johnson Road, approximately 500 feet south of Highway 403, on a hill above the banks of Fairchild Creek, in Brantford Township, sits a long-forgotten graveyard.
Â
There are marked graves for at least 28 people, however, there are likely several others who are buried here in unmarked graves.
Â
The names on the grave markers are for the Cole, File, Healy, Hopkins, Johnson, Lane, Sage, Simpson and Squire families.
Â
There are several small stones with miscellaneous initials, possibly the burial of children. Also, two small stones named “Mother” and “George H.”
Â
The earliest date on the graves is 1819 and the latest is 1909, the youngest person laid to rest here was only 2 years old and the oldest was 79.
Â
These photos start with what you will see from the 403 followed by the short walk in from Johnson Road and right up to the cemetery itself!
