Sometimes the best photo sessions are the ones you never plan.
While setting up for another portrait shoot in my Burlington studio, a group of five young women walked through the Art Gallery of Burlington after completing the annual RUN4LIGHTHOUSE 5K. Still wearing their race shirts, bibs and medals, they had the unmistakable look of runners who had just crossed the finish line. Windblown hair, flushed faces, big smiles and a genuine sense of accomplishment.
Rather than trying to tidy up or create a polished studio look, we embraced the moment exactly as it was.
Each runner stepped in front of a dark backdrop for an individual portrait lit with a beauty dish, creating a dramatic look that highlighted both their personality and the pride of completing the race. Their medals, expressions and post-race energy became the focus of each portrait.
After the individual photos, Rachel, Mia, Hollie, Zoe and Sujany gathered together in front of a white backdrop for a series of fun group portraits. The laughter was constant, the poses were spontaneous and the images captured the friendship, support and shared experience that made the day memorable.
These photographs are a reminder that portrait photography isn’t always about perfect hair, perfect clothing or carefully planned concepts. Sometimes the most meaningful portraits come from real moments, genuine emotions and celebrating an achievement with friends. The result was a collection of images that captured not only what these runners looked like that day, but how they felt.
