Azores Travel Photography

The Azores are unlike anywhere else I’ve photographed. Located in the middle of the North Atlantic, this Portuguese archipelago is a landscape shaped by volcanic forces, where emerald crater lakes, rugged coastlines, waterfalls and rolling green pastures seem to stretch endlessly toward the ocean. The scenery changes with every turn, often within just a few kilometres, making it one of the most rewarding places I’ve ever explored with a camera.

My photographs on this page were captured throughout São Miguel, the largest and most diverse island in the Azores. During several days exploring the island by car and on foot, I visited iconic locations including Sete Cidades, Furnas, Mosteiros, Arnel Lighthouse, Ponta do Sossego, Pico do Ferro, Pico da Barrosa, Terra Nostra Park, the Gorreana Tea Plantation and countless scenic overlooks scattered across the island. Every stop offered something different, from volcanic craters and steaming geothermal landscapes to dramatic sea cliffs, black volcanic rock, lush forests and quiet coastal villages.

As a landscape photographer, I was drawn to the incredible variety of light and weather that defines São Miguel. One moment brought brilliant sunshine over green volcanic hillsides filled with grazing cattle, while the next delivered low clouds, mist and rainbows drifting across crater lakes. These constantly changing conditions created endless opportunities to capture unique photographs that reflect the wild beauty of the Azores.
