This past weekend, I headed to Niagara Falls for a surprise proposal session, capturing real, candid moments as part of my marriage proposal photography in Ontario.
Soosung had a plan to propose to his girlfriend Sofia inside the Floral Showhouse, surrounded by vibrant orchids. We had been in touch for a couple of months leading up to this, working through the timing, location, and exactly how he wanted the moment captured without giving anything away.
I arrived early to scout the location, plan my angles, and make sure everything was set for a smooth, discreet shoot. When Soosung texted that they had arrived, I positioned myself in the lobby, blending in as just another photographer. As they walked in, we exchanged a quick glance and a subtle nod, and just like that, it was on.
They started with a walk through the outdoor gardens, and in a move that honestly caught me off guard, Soosung texted me while walking right beside Sofia: “I’ll do the proposal inside.” The level of stealth here was impressive.
Keeping my distance, I documented their walk naturally as they made their way toward the greenhouse. Once inside, they paused near the pond and fountain before heading toward the orchid rooms, one of the most visually striking spots in the entire showhouse.
Trying to stay one step ahead, I moved into position among the orchids. Another message came through from Soosung: “I’ll propose at the orchids, if you could maybe get people away if possible please :)” The smiley face, mid-proposal planning, said everything.
I quietly let a small group nearby know what was about to happen, giving the couple a bit of space without drawing attention. The only challenge, there were two orchid rooms, so it was a bit of a guessing game.
Then it happened.
Soosung reached down, pulled a ring box from his sock, and dropped to one knee. Sofia’s reaction was immediate, hands to her face, overwhelmed, emotional, completely in the moment. She reached for him, nodded yes, and just like that, everything changed.
Moments like this are exactly why marriage proposal photography in Ontario is so powerful, there’s no staging, no do-overs, just real emotion unfolding in real time.
After the proposal, I captured a few quiet moments as they took it all in, then we moved into some relaxed portraits in the greenhouse before heading back outside to finish the session among the cherry blossoms.
A perfect location, a perfectly executed plan, and a moment they’ll never forget.
