Abandoned Six Million Dollar Mansion

This large abandoned mansion in the Greater Toronto Area has 8 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms within its roughly 6000 square feet of space. The 2.5-storey home was built in 1910 and is named after a famed Canadian financier who lived in this home for more than 50 years until he died in the home in the early 1960s.

The mansion is an example of Period Revival styling influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. Period revival was one of the more popular design styles for upscale home architecture during world war 1.

While there is currently a proposal to demolish this home and build four, three-story townhomes in its place, city heritage advocates are attempting to block the demolition permit and have the home designated as a heritage property.

Their main justification for a heritage designation is due to the fact that the home is historically associated with the neighbourhood it sits within and it is largely associated with the origins of the neighbourhood.

From what I have been able to gather, there is still no set decision on whether the home will be designated and preserved, or demolished and replaced.

As of February 2023 the home has been put back on the real estate market for $6,000,000.

  1. Very cool & beautiful home. To see all the detailed woodwork & know the amount of skill & effort to do that by hand…..I really hope to God this home is saved & restored.
