Abandoned Sacred Heart Church Detroit
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a once-thriving historic church in Roseville, has sat abandoned and decaying since its closure in 2017. This massive abandoned church complex spans 46,480 square feet and includes a 500-seat sanctuary, a rectory, a former convent, two school buildings, and a house/office space. Once a pillar of the community, the church now crumbles, with bricks falling from the structure and debris scattered throughout the property.

The parish’s roots date back to 1861, when Reverend Amandus Van Den Driessche helped establish the Sacred Heart mission. The first church building was completed in 1864, and over the decades, it grew into a thriving parish. The current structure’s basement was built in 1930, but the Great Depression and World War II delayed the upper church’s completion until 1950.
Despite its rich religious history, Sacred Heart was closed as part of a consolidation plan due to declining attendance and financial struggles. In 2020, the property was sold to a developer who plans to demolish most of the buildings to make way for a storage facility and retail center, preserving only the bell tower. The city has stated that due to legal constraints, there is nothing they can do to stop the demolition.
