Exploring Ontario’s Waterfalls Episode #6: Jones Falls Waterfall, Owen Sound Ontario

Exploring Ontario’s Waterfalls Episode #6: Jones Falls Waterfall, Owen Sound Ontario

Jones Falls is a decent size cascading waterfall, though smaller than the better known Inglis Falls and Indian Falls, both also in the outskirts of Owen Sound.

Just as I did, you can park along the main east-west road leading west from Owen Sound, from which the falls is visible when the leaves are off the trees.

A short walk through the woods leads to the footbridge over the river above the falls, followed by more trails.

Jones Falls cascades over the escarpment 12 metres to the Pottawatomi River that flows into Owen Sound Bay. Please note that water flow is minimal during August and September. The Pottawatomi Conservation Area is 116 hectares of Niagara Escarpment land and provides many recreational activities.

Four popular waterfalls spill from the rocky Niagara Escarpment near Owen Sound, rushing into nearby rivers and streams: Inglis Falls, Indian Falls, Weavers’ Creek Falls and this one, Jones Falls.

Each waterfall is less than 10 kilometres from the downtown Visitor Information Centre, so you can tour all in a single day. Or take your time and choose one or two on each visit, exploring the falls, forests and trails around them.

Spring season is “high tide” for these 4 waterfalls, where the water flow is abundant, but they are popular in all seasons and during my visits in the summer of 2020, the waterflow was still very impressive

Jones, Inglis and Weaver’s Creek falls are linked by marked trails, offering experienced hikers an invigorating day trip with many look-out points along the way.
In winter, these three waterfalls are accessible by snowshoe.
